Infertility affects about 15% of reproductive age couples. It is by far the most common reason why patients seek evaluation and help at the Alta Bates IVF Program. While multiple factors can result in sub-fertility, the three major ones pertain to the eggs, the sperm and female pelvic anatomy.

Irregular menstruation most frequently results from a heterogonous condition known as PCOS (poly-cystic ovary syndrome) but careful history and select testing may be needed to rule out other hormonal conditions which can mimic PCOS. 

Pregnancy losses, especially repetitive miscarriages, represent a separate diagnostic category from infertility. Couples facing this condition require a thorough work-up and careful follow-up treatment.

Preservation of fertility in the face of cancer and other medical threats has emerged recently as an area of expertise at the Alta Bates IVF Program. Close cooperation between the fertility and cancer specialists provides for optimal highly individualized patient care.
